Automakers gear up to display mileage details

Mumbai, Jan. 26 Come April 1 and all manufacturers of cars and two-wheelers will have to display details on fuel economy of their models at their dealer outlets and other sales points. This is in line with a SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) directive and the good news is that some companies have already got this ready.

Automobile manufacturers decided at the annual convention of SIAM on September 4, 2008 to implement the ‘voluntary labelling programme’, under which the fuel consumption consumer information will be displayed at the point of sales of passenger cars and two-wheelers.

“By April 1 all cars and two-wheelers that are produced and sold in India will display this information,” said Mr Dilip Chenoy, Director-General, SIAM. While Maruti-Suzuki already kicked off this exercise on December 31 last year, Tata Motors has not been too far behind. The fuel economy details of its models have been displayed at its dealerships from the beginning of this year. Its joint venture partner Fiat will follow suit from February.

“We are ready with all information relating to fuel economy of our models. We will begin displaying it at our dealerships from next month,” said Mr Rajeev Kapur, CEO, Fiat India Automobiles. These will comprise nearly 70 outlets, which house both Tata and Fiat cars as part of a joint retailing initiative.

Efficient models

According to fuel economy details issued by Tata Motors at its dealerships, the most fuel-efficient compact car is the Indica Vista (20.9 kilometres to a litre) fitted with the Fiat multijet diesel.

In the midsize category, its Indigo Dicor diesel tops the list with 21.4 km/ltr. SUVs, Sumo Grande diesel records 12.38 km/ltr mileage while Tata Safari diesel shows 11.10 km/ltr.

Among petrol versions, Indica Xeta, Indica Vista and Indigo CS show 14.8 km, 15.7 km and 12.8 km respectively.

Other automobile manufacturers are also undertaking tests on their vehicles and are in the process of displaying fuel economy details at the dealerships.

“This is a welcome initiative from the customer point of view. We might do it before the deadline,” said Mr H.S. Goindi, Senior Vice-President, TVS Motors.

Hyundai Motors India plans to disclose mileage details from April 1. “Whatever is the deadline we will comply with that,” said Mr Arvind Saxena, Senior Vice-President, HMIL.

Maruti Suzuki was the first one to disclose the fuel consumption consumer information. The company did it on December 31.
