KOLKATA: Fiat India Automobiles -– the 50:50 JV between Fiat Group Automobiles SpA and Tata Motors -- is all set to see car sales zoom from a paltry 4,500 units in 2008 to cross the 100,000 mark by 2011.
"As much as 90% of the volumes will be primarily driven by sales of recently launched Fiat Linea and Fiat Grand Punto, which is scheduled to be launched by the second half of 2009 calendar.
During 2009, we are expecting a volume of 40,000 units which is likely to touch 80,000 in 2010. Around 10% of the total volume every year will also be exported," Rajeev Kapoor, president & CEO, Fiat India Automobiles, said. He was talking to reporters at the launch of Fiat Linea in Kolkata on Thursday.
In due course, Fiat India will evaluate all vehicles in the global Fiat portfolio for launch in India. Fiat product profiles includes cars like Panda, Doblo, Multipla, Sedici and Qubo.
Interestingly, the Grand Punto will be priced at the Rs 5 lakh-plus category and will be a hatchback vehicle. The company, however, is also ramping up its dealer base. Plans include increasing it from the 70 Tata-Fiat dealer outlets to 100 by middle of 2009. In the pipeline are launches of Fiat Bravo, Cinquecento (Fiat 500), which will serve the niche segment.
"We have managed to achieve a very high level of indegenisation of Linea, which will also keep costs of spares under control allowing better after sales service. The car has also been competitively priced. We hope to acquire 25% marketshare in the B+ segment by this year end," said Mr Kapoor.
Fiat's Linea, a C+ segment vehicle, is expected to clock a volume of 24,000 units in the first year. The rest of the volumes will be a mixture of Grand Punto, Palio, Bravo and Fiat 500. Plans also include launching a small car, the details of which will be finalised during 2010. The company has also decided to go for a facelift of Fiat Palio during 2010.
"All this will help cross the 100,000 sales figure by 2011. Both Fiat Linea and Grand Punto will be manufactured at the joint venture's Ranjangaon facility and will be sold through Tata-Fiat dealers," said Mr Kapoor.
