Hyundais 20-20 Vision

08/01/2009, Daily News & Analysis
Hyundai has been fast adding cars to its stables and vying to be the number 1 car manufacturer in the country. By ushering in the i20, (which was very well received during the Paris Motor Show,) Hyundai has decided to take on not only Suzuki Swift but Skoda Fabia as well and now buyers are spoilt for more choice with this fresh-looking car.

The i20 is a car that holds appeal for different reasons but it's mainly set to meet the expectations of Hyundai buyers across the world. Besides the fact that it's been designed at Hyundai's European centre in Russelheim, Germany, the car comes with
a 4-cylinder, 16 Valve DOHC, 1197 cc engine.

On the outside, the car is a stunner. Beautiful headlamps, a stylish bonnet, attractive grille, fancy taillights and an uber-chic shape give the hatch a contemporary, fashionable feel. It's the kind of car that both men and women, young and old will take to instantly.

So whether you want to get it in order to drive to work everyday or simply to make that ice-run to the corner shop in the middle of your cocktail party, with this car, you're always going to be hunting for reasons to get behind the wheel. Once behind the wheel you'll notice (and be pleasantly surprised) that the steering maneuvers the i20 ever so smoothly through the chaotic city traffic. Also the audio controls on the steering seem like a boon as you ensconce yourself in the cabin, listening to your favourite genre of music.

On the inside, surprise, surprise there's oodles of space and you actually wonder if you were able to imagine the car could be this spacious and roomy when viewing it from the outside. There is plenty of space in the boot and the rear seats can be split 60:40 giving you additional room for all those who love to take all their paraphernalia along with them to their workplace. The display at the centre of the dashboard is pretty funky in its amber-coloured display giving you the trip reading along with attractive dials definitely speak volumes about the design teams efforts to break away from the earlier Hyundai (designed in Korea) image.

Hyundai has equipped the car with plenty of standard equipment as well as lots of safety equipment such as airbags, ABS and EBD and once inside, you will not fail to admire the spectacular fit and finish on the i20. All the years we spent complaining about Hyundai's B-grade plastic quality seem to have paid off with improvements on the previously launched i10. Now, with the i20 they've taken it up even more seriously and it'll be enough to say that you're bound to be pleasantly startled when you see what greets the eye. The car we drove came with plum- beige coloured dual tone interiors that looked delicious and inviting.

The rear seats feel slightly low but the fit and finish, classy colour tone and thoughtful touches more than make up for any shortcomings or discomfort that you may experience when seated inside.

Available in three variants, the Magna, the Asta and Asta (O), the car boasts a 5-speed manual gearbox, tubeless tyres and a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres. Finally, starting at Rs 5,03,028 (ex-showroom, Mumbai), the i20 definitely seems like it has all the trappings of a car that buyers would want. Undoubtedly, here's a car that will be ruling the roost for at least some time now.
