India, Germany sign cooperation agreement on auto sector

New Delhi, Feb 06: As automotive industry continues to reel under the global meltdown, India and Germany on Friday agreed to cooperate in various areas of the sector as the two countries seek to jointly overcome not only short term but also long term challenges.

A joint working group (JWG) on automotive sector has been formed under the aegis of Indo-German Joint Commission on Industrial and Economic Cooperation to provide a framework to generate synergy in the sector for mutual development.

The areas of cooperation include technology development, institutional cooperation and commercialisation.

"The German auto industry has been hit hard by the global economic downturn and our auto sector is also not insulated.

Therefore, this initiative between our countries is even more relevant and essential today," Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Dev said while addressing the first meeting of JWG here.

"This is because in addition to meeting the concerns of sustainable auto-mobility, JWG will also include initiating steps for quality improvement enhance productivity through possible joint ventures and technology sharing," he added.

The group is aimed at greater exchange of information and cooperation in the fields of research and development, sustainable alternative fuels and drives and automotive efficient engine technologies.
