SIAM initiative to re-cycle 2 wheelers

BL reported that the Indian automobile industry is warming up to the world wide trend of using materials that can be re-cycled, in the production of vehicles. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the industry body of vehicle makers is starting an experimental project on recycling of 2 wheelers in Chennai.

Mr Dilip Chenoy director general SIAM said that “Given 75% of vehicles in India are 2 wheelers, we are emphasizing recycling. We are launching a recycling program in India and undertaking research to see how we can re-use the material used in 2 wheelers.”

Mr Chenoy said that “We have just got the approval from the Ministry of Heavy Industry. The demonstration project is to come up at the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project facility at Oragadam near Chennai. The project will start in 2 months.”

Mr Chenoy said that “The demonstration pilot project is to understand the issues involved in recycling 2 wheelers. Also, when we are go for electric 2 wheelers how do we address the issue of recycling the batteries, and things like that. We want to make it an economically viable project.”

Mr Chenoy further added that the project is being led by Mr NS Mohan Ram of TVS Motor Company.

About the current level of recycling, he said that it is not done in an organized manner and some of the vehicle parts find their way to the replacement market.

Recycling the materials used in automobile firms has become an environmentally relevant topic as the disposal of end of life vehicles has cast a burden across the world. The recycling of cars is quite popular and the European Commission has made it mandatory that 85% of the materials used in automobile manufacturing should be recyclable.
