Alto Clocks Highest Ever Sales in March, Crosses 23k Mark

Details At a time when rivals are struggling to push sales, the country's largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India, has claimed that its popular hatchback Alto has recorded highest ever sales in March at 23,569 units, thereby crossing the 20,000 mark in a month for the 11th time.

According to a company official, Alto witnessed a jump of 20.98 per cent during the month over the corresponding period last year. MSI had sold 19,482 units in March, 2008.

"So far only two cars in the history of Indian automobile industry have crossed the 20,000 units mark in single month- once by M800 and 11 times by Alto," the official said.

Last month was the 51st consecutive month for the company, in which Alto crossed the 10,000 units mark, he added.

"The model is very successful among the people and we sold 2.12 lakh units of the car in 2008-09," the official said, adding MSI sold 2.27 lakh units of Alto in FY'08.

Alto was the first car brand to sell over two lakh units in the domestic market in a single financial year -- 2006-07, he added.

Last year, the 800cc car crossed 10 lakh units mark since its launch in September, 2000, of which 1.87 lakh units have been sold in the overseas markets
