M&M may set up 2-wheeler plant

NEW DELHI: As it revs up in the two-wheeler business one year after the acquisition of Kinetic’s assets, Mahindra and Mahindra on Thursday said it was considering greenfield expansion to ramp up production capacity, for which it was looking at various states, including tax-free states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where rivals Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS are already present.

“Currently we have a capacity of 5 lakh units at Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh) that we got with the acquisition of assets of Kinetic. As volumes grow, we will be looking at expansion for which we are evaluating various locations,” Anoop Mathur, president of Mahindra’s two-wheeler vertical, told TOI from Mumbai where the company unveiled two new 125cc gearless scooters ‘Rodeo’ and ‘Duro’ sans the Kinetic brand name.

Asked whether states likes Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh figured in list of possible location, he said, “We are not ruling them out. The strong fiscal benefits that they offer are an advantage.”
