Maserati in India with 1.2cr tag

NEW DELHI: Italian sports carmaker Maserati has entered the Indian market, just as competitors like Ferrari and Aston Martin are also gearing up for their debut.

Part of the Fiat Group, Maserati has tied up with the Shreyans Group to sell three car models in India, which include the Quattroporte sedan, GranTurismo and GranCabrio. The cars will cost upwards of Rs 1.2 crore, and officials said sales were expected to reach three-digit mark over the next three years as more and more Indians opted for supercars as affluence rose. "We will start this year with one dealership in Mumbai and the second one will open in New Delhi in 2012," said Simone Niccolai, MD for Asia-Pacific.

The company plans to open dealerships in seven cities by 2015, but he declined to give a sales target.

Maserati said global sales grew 18% in 2010 at 5776 units, with the US being its biggest market on sale of 2000-plus units. China is the biggest market for the company in the Asia-Pacific region and last year accounted for 402 units.
