Tata aims to book 10 lakh Nano in first two weeks

Tata Motors launching the Nano small car this Monday.

This small car is much awaited and it is likely to see massive bookings in the first couple of weeks.

Tata Motors is aiming to book as many as 10 lakh units within the first two weeks.

This should get the company a collection of Rs 7,000 crore considering every booking would require at least Rs. 70,000.

However, people interested in getting their hands on a Nano would have to be extremely lucky.

The supply is going to be very less considering Nano would be shipped initially from the company’s Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand, which has a capacity to produce only 3,000 cars per month.

Situation is only likely to improve next year when Tata would start manufacturing the Nano at their new plant currently being constructed in Sanand.

Tata Motors bags Rs.2200-cr DTC order for 1625 low-floor buses, and their maintenance

NEW DELHI, January 29, 2009: Tata Motors has won yet another order from the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to supply 1625 ultra low-floor buses, and their maintenance for 12 years. The contract is valued at Rs.2200 crores, comprising about Rs.900 crores for the 1625 buses, and about Rs.1300 crores for the 12-year maintenance contract for these buses.

This is the second consecutive occasion that the DTC has entrusted Tata Motors with its prestigious order, aimed at revamping the city’s transportation system. The first such order by the DTC in 2007 for 650 such buses was won by Tata Motors, and the company fulfilled the order in batches, as per schedule, in 2008.

As has been seen in the Tata Motors buses already plying in Delhi, these ultra low-floor buses make entry and exit extremely convenient, with passengers almost walking into them, rather than climbing. A pneumatically deployed automatic access ramp makes it particularly convenient for those with special challenges, who can even come in with their wheel-chairs. Wide twin doors, at the centre and the front, permit three individuals to simultaneously enter and exit.

The interiors are spacious. The seats are ergonomically designed, and the corridors wide enough for easy movement. Special features include a communication system connecting the driver to passengers and electronic destination board.

The engine, at the rear, reduces noise, heat and vibration levels, while also increasing interior space. Full pneumatic suspension and automatic transmission further add to a comfortable ride. Tata Motors will be responsible for the maintenance of these buses for 12 years.

Success of Tata Motors ultra low-floor buses in Delhi is encouraging other cities to consider similar transportation solutions.

Tata Motors, Leyland downgraded

CHENNAI: Bad news confronts commercial vehicle makers. Rating agency Crisil downgraded its ratings on Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland's debt. It follows Crisil's re-assessment of its ratings on commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturers, in light of the challenging operating environment in the CV industry.

The downgrades will affect Tata Motors' Rs 9,000 crore debt and bank facilities including Rs 3,000 crore short-term debt programme. For Ashok Leyland, the ratings downgrade affect non-convertible debentures and long-term bank facilities adding upto Rs 715 crore. However, Crisil has reaffirmed its rating on the company's commercial paper and short-term bank facilities worth Rs 800 crore to P1+. This rating indicates that the degree of safety regarding timely payment on the instrument is very strong and at a comparatively higher standing.

Crisil has downgraded Tata Motors' by one notch to 'A/Stable/P1' from 'AA-/Stable/P1+'. The agency said the downgrade reflects the significant impact of the weakening business environment on the company's global and Indian operations. Crisil combined the business profiles of Tata Motors and its subsidiaries, including the Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) operations. It has also made adjustments for the assets and liabilities of the financing business carried on by Tata Motors Finance Ltd, the captive finance subsidiary of Tata Motors.
The weak demand for automobiles in the US and Europe, and the shift in consumer preference away from sport utility vehicles (SUVs), is expected to result in a sharp decline in revenues and profitability for the JLR operations, given their high fixed-cost structure. "JLR's operations contribute around two-thirds to Tata Motors' consolidated revenues; therefore, the impact of the dip in JLR's volumes on the consolidated operations will be significant," Crisil said.

For Ashok Leyland, the agency has downgraded its ratings by one notch on non-convertible debentures, and long-term bank facilities, to 'AA-/Negative' from 'AA/Negative'. The (-) sign denotes comparatively weaker standing within the category. The change in the company's long-term rating reflects an increase in business and financial risk due to the expectation of continued weak demand for medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs), coupled with increased leverage because of the ongoing debt-funded capital expenditure, Crisil said.
It expects MHCV sales, which contributes more than 85 per cent to Ashok Leyland's revenues, to remain subdued over the medium term, because of the slowdown in economic growth. It added that lower-than-expected demand, combined with a high proportion of fixed costs, will result in an overall decline in Ashok Leyland's cash accruals and profitability, despite the intense cost reduction efforts initiated by the company.

Tata Motors move equipment to another facility

Kolkata: Tata Motors has moved equipment key to manufacturing 'Nano,' car, from its under- construction plant at Singur in West Bengal to another facility in order to meet its roll-out obligation.
Sources familiar with the development said that equipment was carted out from the plant and the cargo is believed to have been moved to the company's plant in Pantnagar in Uttarakhand.
When contacted, a Tata Motors spokesman said, "I have no comments to make."
The company, which unveiled the Nano in January this year, had committed that the commercial launch of the sub-USD 3,000 car would take place in the October-December quarter.
Work on the project in Singur was suspended earlier this month following fierce opposition to the project. The Trinamool Congress in West Bengal has been demanding that 300 acres from the project site be returned to farmers, but the state government has expressed its inability to return anything more than 70 acres.

Investments a priority for Singur: Nooyi

New Delhi: Amid ongoing controversies surrounding Tata Motors' Nano project in Singur, PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi today said the West Bengal government must sort out the issue to attract future investments in the state.
"There has been a setback because of Singur. The West Bengal government has to sort through its issues and figure out whether it wants investments," Nooyi told reporters when asked about the problems faced by the Tatas in Singur.
Work at Tata Motors' Nano car plant at Singur, where it had planned to invest Rs 1,500 crore to manufacture the world's cheapest car, has been suspended following opposition led by Trinamool Congress.
"This is an uniquely state issue which has national implications. But it has to be sorted out by themselves (state government) so that foreign investments can come in," she said on the sidelines of a CII event.
When asked if the current atmosphere in Singur would affect the mindset of US investors in India, Nooyi replied in negative.
"As PepsiCo, we have a plant in Kolkata. It's doing very very well. West Bengal has been a great state for us," she added.
"Democracy goes through its ups and downs. The idea is to work through all these ups and downs. We remain bullish on India and I am confident India will work through its issues," Nooyi said.

Tata Motors Rolls Out New Indica Vista

Tata Motors launched a new generation Indica Vista on August 25, 2008. Launched first in 1998, close to 9.1 lakh Indicas have been produced since then with over 1.127 million cars having rolled off the platform.
Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Ratan N Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons and Tata Motors, said, “The second generation Indica Vista showcases the progress Tata Motors has made over the last several years of its first outing in the passenger car business in design, quality, technology, performance and refinement. The company is greatly appreciative of the endorsement by the market of our first Indica offering and I am very hopeful that the Indica Vista will surpass its predecessor in appeal.”

A complete new skin houses an all-new interior and the sculpted evolutionary, yet very contemporary body makes a bold styling statement. At nearly 3.8m length and 1.7m width, with a wheelbase of 2470mm, the car has grown in size, mostly in the interior space. A new central character line on the hood, sharp crease lines on the door below the beltline, a honeycomb grille and striking petal shaped headlamps complement the trademark smiling grille and tall tail lights that are distinctive to the Indica.

The interiors have the instrument cluster now placed in the centre of the dashboard. A dual-tone grey and beige interior with a pleasing soft feels grain structure on the top end version gives the car a premium touch. A two DIN CD System with a USB port and remote control enables music to be customised to one’s needs.

On comfort too, the Indica Vista has a number of unique, thoughtful touches. The height adjustable driver’s seat and the tilt-adjustable steering wheel enable better driving posture. Utility space in the floor console under the seat and the deep glove box, which can accommodate a laptop, give that extra space when needed. Tubeless tyres, a new twist beam suspension, gas filled shock absorbers, a sub-frame construction for enhanced transverse stiffness lead to better ride and drive comfort as well as improved handling. Among the safety features is the rear wiper switching on in reverse when the front wiper is on.

The car is powered by a range of powertrains - the new 75 bhp 1.3L Quadrajet Common Rail Diesel engine and the 65bhp, 1.2L CVCP Safire MPFI petrol engine being manufactured at the Fiat-Tata joint venture at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra. The Quadrajet operates at 1400 bar with 4 injections per cycle and delivers a high torque of 190Nm over a flatter speed range for better city driving. The Safire has a continuous variable cam phaser (CVCP) for improved drivability and fuel economy and a drive by wire technology for accelerator pedal control. Both engines are mated to a new cable aided gearbox with twin synchronisers for precise shift feel and quality. It also has the option of the existing 1.4L turbocharged intercooled TDi engine, which has been refined further and mated to a smooth shift gearbox.

The car comes with a segment best 24 months’ (75000 km) warranty and will be available in a range of 7 colours through 170 dealerships across the country which are progressively being renovated to wear a refreshed identity in tune with the new offering. The car is being launched in 7 variants priced at Rs.3.49 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi for the 1.2L petrol Safire at the low end going upto Rs.4.88 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi for the top end 1.3L Quadrajet. The TDi version comes at nearly the same price as the Indica V2 version.
The existing Indica will continue to exist with a rationalised portfolio - the lower versions of the 1.2L Xeta and the 1.4L naturally aspirated IDI diesel and one version each of the DICOR and TCIC diesel, the latter being available with ABS and Airbags. Between the existing Indica V2 and new Indica Vista range, customers will have a choice at every step of the Rs.2.6 lakhs – Rs.4.88 lakhs price range.

Karnataka offers land for Nano plant

Bangalore:
Bangalore: The Karnataka government has offered 1000 acres of land at Dharwad to Tata Motors for setting up Nano car plant.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has also offered several other facilities for the small car project.
Managing Director of Tata Motors G Ravikant met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday.

"The CM said he will give all support and required incentives if we want to relocate the plant," said Ravikanth after his meeting with the chief minister.

The company already has an equipment manufacturing facility at Dharwad.
Ravikanth said the project will be an integrated one and requires 1,000 acres of land.
"The company is yet to decide on relocation, though it is actively looking for alternatives. We will consult with our chairman Ratan Tata," Ravikanth said.
The operations at Tata's manufacturing unit at Singur in West Bengal came to a halt early this month after protests by opposition parties over the acquisition of farmland.

Tata Motors Suspends Work on Nano Plant in Singur

Kolkata, September 2nd 2008: Tata Motors Ltd. has been constrained to suspend the construction and commissioning work at the Nano Plant in Singur in view of continued confrontation and agitation at the site. This decision was taken in order to ensure the safety of its employees and contract labour, who have continued to be violently obstructed from reporting to work. The company has assessed the prevailing situation in Singur, after five continuous days of cancellation of work, and believes that there is no change in the volatile situation around the plant. The project’s auto ancillary partners, who had commenced work at their respective plants in Singur, were also constrained to suspend work in line with Tata Motors’ decision.
In view of the current situation, the company is evaluating alternate options for manufacturing the Nano car at other company facilities and a detailed plan to relocate the plant and machinery to an alternate site is under preparation. To minimize the impact this may have on the recently recruited and trained people from West Bengal, the Company is exploring the possibility of absorbing them at its other plant locations.
Construction of the plant has faced challenges at various points of time. There has however been a significant decline in the attendance of their staff and contractual labour since August 24, 2008. Some of the international consultants working on the plant have returned home and the construction work in the plant has been stalled since August 28, 2008. In fact, the existing environment of obstruction, intimidation and confrontation has begun to impact the ability of the company to convince several of its experienced managers to relocate and work in the plant. Further, several persons engaged in the construction and commissioning work who had taken accommodation at Singur and nearby areas have since vacated and have gone away due to intimidation and fear.
Construction of the Nano project comprising of the Nano manufacturing facilities and the vendor park, a normal feature in modern world-class auto plants, commenced in January 2007. The work on the construction and commissioning of the plant had been nearing completion in line with planned schedules. During construction, this project employed about 4000 employees at its peak including several hundred young residents from and around the region.
As a part of its commitment to enhance the employability of its people. Tata Motors has trained over 762 ITIs and other apprentices from the region and the state. They have undergone retraining at the Tata Motors facilities in Jamshedpur and Pune. Tata Motors’ efforts to offer medical care in and around the region, which had handled over 17,000 medical cases, have been forcefully stopped by violent agitators. As part of the proposed integrated auto cluster in Singur, about 60 key auto ancillary suppliers to the Nano have taken possession of land in the integrated complex and have invested about Rs.500 crores towards construction of their plants and procurement of their equipment and machinery.
Commenting on the situation, a Tata Motors spokesperson said, “The situation around the Nano plant continues to be hostile and intimidating. There is no way this plant could operate efficiently unless the environment became congenial and supportive of the project. We came to West Bengal hoping we could add value, prosperity and create job opportunities in the communities in the State.”
