Bajaj to Launch Cars on Renault Platform

Bajaj Auto, which is planning launch four-wheelers in both passenger and commercial vehicle segment in 2012, will use the Renault platform for their production. The platform is under development, and it will share common aggregates, catering to requirements of passenger vehicles as well as goods carriers, said Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj.

“Our four-wheelers are due in 2012. It will be a new platform. But the project is a common one with Renault, and on a common platform. The basic structure of the vehicle — the engine, transmission, chassis — will be common,” Mr Bajaj told reporters at the launch of two new three-wheeler products.

Bajaj Auto, which last September announced its plans to bring out three-wheelers under the Bajaj RE brand, said the four-wheeled commercial vehicle could fit in the RE brand. However, “the passenger vehicle will not fit in the RE brand”, Mr Bajaj said.

Bajaj had said last year that they were gradually phasing out the GC 1000 and Mega brands. RC Maheshwari, CEO, Bajaj Auto’s three-wheeler business, said they have already phased out the GC 1,000 brand four months ago. It will be replaced by another to revamp its three-wheeler line up. The revamp involves the launch of two new platforms this quarter. In the past, Mr Bajaj has been critical of the looks and aesthetics of the three-wheeler.
