Piaggio's Vespa LX 125 scooters to hit Indian roads next year

MUMBAI: Italian auto major Piaggio Vehicles today unveiled its new Vespa LX 125 scooter , which is expected to hit Indian roads next year.

The company is setting up a new facility at Baramati, near Pune, at an investment of 30 million euros to manufacture the scooters. The new facility is expected to be ready shortly.

"Our new Vespa LX 125 will hit the Indian market by early 2012. It is a new product which will be manufactured from our new facility at Baramati," Piaggio Vehicles Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Chopra told reporters here.

"We will invest 30 million euros to set up a new facility at Baramati. The scooter plant will have an annual capacity of 1.5 lakh units per annum," he said.

Vespa was earlier sold as LML Vespa in partnership with Kanpur-based Lohia Machinery Limited (LML).

The company currently sells light commercial vehicles in the country, including the 'Ape' transport vehicle.

The company also announced that its Aprilia RSV4 superbike will hit the Indian market soon.

"We are proud to introduce the Aprilia RSV4 in the Indian market. We are in the process of bringing our global line-up of highly successful superbikes to India. It will be available in the market soon," Chopra said.

However, Chopra, did not reveal the prices of Aprilia RSV4 and Vespa LX 125.

Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited is a fully-owned subsidiary of Piaggio, Italy . Piaggio India has 760 sales points pan-India.

The company is also setting up a facility to manufacture diesel and petrol engines at Baramati at an investment of 60 million euros.

"We plan to manufacture 50,000 diesel engines and one lakh petrol engines per annum...," he said.
