NEW DELHI, Feb. 8: Automobile history rolled out once again on the Capital’s roads this morning on the occasion of the annual Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally.
The chief guest, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, went beyond flagging off the rally, but with some family members, took a ride in one of the cars from Statesman House, Barakhamba Road, to India Gate.
Ninety seven cars, produced between 1914 and 1960, were applauded by the large gathering despite the morning chill. The sentimental favourite, as usual, was the 1914 John Morris fire engine of the National Rail Museum. The 1919 Citreon owned by Mr Vir Srivastava exuded such charm that Admiral Mehta and Mrs Maria Teresa Mehta had themselves photographed posing in its front seats after they were received by the Editor and Managing Director of The Statesman, Mr Ravindra Kumar.
After the flag-off the cars travelled down Kasturba Gandhi Marg, India Gate, Puran Quila road, Pragati Maidan, Ring Road, DND flyway to Marwah Studios in Film City and finally reached YMCA Greater Noida via Greater Noida Expressway. The total distance covered was 84 km. At YMCA-Greater Noida, participants were entertained by the music band Black Slade.
The Rally returned to Modern School, Barakhamba Road, where souvenirs of participation were presented to the participants by Mrs Antara Kumar. Mrs Rama Dewan, the wife of Vice Admiral, DK Dewan, Chief of Personnel, Indian Navy awarded trophies to the various winners. The Statesman Challenge Trophy for the oldest participant went to the John Morris fire engine, while Ms Roshni Jaiswal‘s 1937 Rolls Royce won the CR Irani Memorial Trophy as well as another trophy. Mr Daljeet Titus’ collection of cars also picked up lots of silver
