Maruti in Talks With Haryana Govt For Crash Test Facility
Indicating that coming up with the right product at the right time in the market is the mantra today, Singh said that if the company sets up the test facility here, it would save on cost and time. He, however, did not divulge more details on how large the facility would be, except that it would be at par with the facility of Suzuki in Japan.
MSIL is also working on CNG variants of its vehicles. Alternative fuel technology is the future. We will be looking at CNG variants of our vehicles, he said. MSIL has WagonR and Maruti 800 running on LPG.The company will launch A-Star in the domestic market next month, followed by its launch in Europe. The Euro V compliant A-Star which will be powered by the next generation K-Series engine and will largely cater to the European market. The company plans to export about 1,00,000 cars to Europe. By 2011, the company plans to take the exports to 2,00,000 cars.
Asked if the company will be looking at fine tuning other models for the European market, Singh said, Exports will our major focus now and there are few plans in pipeline. Currently MSIL exports to non-European markets and has achieved numbers of 60,000-70,000 cars.

Auto sector to double GDP share in decade - Kamal Nath
Kamal Nath also said the government would consider incentives for exporters of cars and auto-part makers and keep policy favourable to help auto makers sustain high growth in output.
"We believe that the sector's contribution to GDP will double from its current 5 percent to 10 percent .... and exports should go up nine times," Nath told a business conference.
"By the middle of next decade, India should be the destination of choice for design and manufacture of automotive components and vehicles in the world."
India's booming auto sector has lured major companies to tap the domestic market, and many of them plan to make it an export hub to take advantage of low-cost labour and components.
Nath said Maruti Suzuki, India's biggest car maker, was planning to scale up its capacity to 1 million cars by 2010, Hyundai was looking at capacity of 600,000 cars by 2009 in the country and Toyota plans to scale up output to 200,000 units.
Demand for cars has been hit by rising interest rates, with the central bank raising its key lending rate to a seven-year high of 9 percent in July, and rising input costs have squeezed profit margins of auto makers.
"I believe this is a passing phase," Nath said.

Maruti Suzuki Alto achieves a whopping mileage of 41.5 km to a litre

Top 10 participants at Alto Mileage Rallies achieve average mileage of 30 kmpl
Ahmedabad, 4th August 2008. India’s most popular car Maruti Suzuki Alto achieved a spectacular mileage of 41.5 kilometers per litre (kmpl) in a fuel efficiency rally in the city, yesterday. The top 10 participants achieved a mileage of over 36.5 kmpl of petrol. The Mileage Rally was third in the series as a part of company’s initiative to reinforce the supremacy of Alto as the most fuel efficient car in its category and inculcate driving practices that enhance fuel efficiency.
In a similar event in Mumbai yesterday, the top mileage was 37.7 kmpl while the top ten participants achieved an average of 31.5 kmpl.
Last month, in the inaugural fuel efficiency rally at Delhi, 105 Alto customers participated achieving an average mileage of 26.24 kmpl. The winner in Delhi event achieved 34.55 kmpl mileage.
Maruti Suzuki cars are renowned for their fuel efficiency and value for money proposition for over three generation of buyers.
The excellent mileage scored by the participants in the three rallies proved beyond doubt that the Alto is the Mileage King amongst the cars in India The company plans to organize similar rallies in other cities across the country.
Most participants felt that their Alto cars give excellent mileage and attributed the same to the regular maintenance. At the same time driving within the specified speed range of 50-55 kilometer per hour surely helped the engine perform the best.
Since its launch in September 2000, the popularity of the ‘hottest little car’ has continued to grow, selling over one million units cumulatively. Customers are attracted to its unmatched combination of fuel efficiency, contemporary design and looks and features including Electronic Power Steering and air-conditioning.
Safety features like the collapsible steering column and booster assisted brakes reassure customers, and add to the popularity of the Alto. Like other Maruti Suzuki models, Alto is equipped with iCATS – a factory fitted immobilizer system that prevents theft of the car.
Recently Alto crossed the million units mark in just seven years and five months since its launch. Of this, the last 5 lakh units (half a million) have come in a record 25 months.
Record-breaking performance:
Alto has many records against its name.
First car brand to sell over 2 lakh units in the domestic market in a single financial year (in 2006-07). In fiscal 2007-08 Alto repeated the feat once again by selling 227,173 cars.
Alto recorded its highest ever monthly sales of 22,784 units in November 2007. This is the highest ever-domestic sales achieved by any car in India in a month.
Alto’s International exposure
Besides its success in India, over 152,000 Alto made at Maruti Suzuki are plying internationally. While Netherlands has the highest numbers (over 22,000 units) the Alto has recently made big inroads in Algeria and Chile already each selling over 7,000 units in this fiscal. Over 21,335 Altos have been exported this fiscal.
